You don’t have to spend a fortune to get spotlight-ready styles. Here are my top tips for how you can score some stage worthy looks at prices that rock🤘

Shop Specifics out of Season

Keep an eye out for those end of season sales, and use them to stock up on the right things. Do not use it as an opportunity to buy the past summer’s trendy patterned dresses…they may not be the “thing” next summer!

Pieces that are timeless and will not go out of style:

  • Leather jackets (Brown, black, gray, tan)
  • Solid color belts
  • Button up blouses
  • Black high heels
  • Little black cocktail dresses
  • Solid color purses & leather purses
  • Classic Pencil skirts (solid, neutral colors)
  • Simple, subtle jewelry in traditional gold and silver

Trend the RIGHT way

Embrace Trends, but don’t invest in them. For example, animal prints are all the rage and will still be the rage come spring time. Stock up on modestly priced blouses, tops, scarves, and maybe a couple pairs of select season shoes. DO NOT go out and buy a $200 faux snakeskin Michael Kors Purse. Chances are you are going to be carrying that purse longer than you will be wearing that cheetah print body suit… Invest in staple pieces that will stay with you for a while. Pass on expensive items that will not last longer than a season. #swerve

Picture this: Someone just donated their Michael Kors snakeskin purse to a local second hand boutique because they thought snakeskin was never coming back…

But then, NYFW 2018 happened, and now you know it’s back. You go in and find this purse that was originally $300 and pick it up for $50. #swerveback

Moral of the story? Thrift shops are a great way to find random trendy pieces that may be so out of style that they came back around, full orbit. Never be too cool for Goodwill or second hand boutiques. They are definitely one of my favorite places to find inspiration for fashion and all kinds of projects! Plus, this is a great way to re sell or donate your old fashions that you’re not rocking anymore.

There is ONE accessory that fashion designers local, national, & international have agreed ALWAYS  flatters every body type and size… Modern and non gender-exclusive, everyone of all and ages and backgrounds can rock this look for some added VAMP.

When it comes to the modeling industry, or simply just wanting to look GREAT, there is one specific element that can tie the whole look together, or make the entire style look subpar.

Without it, the look is nowhere near as vibrant or as stately as it could be. I HIGHLY recommend everyone go out and find this while it is still available…

THE ONE SINGLE ACCESSORY YOU NEED TO OWN NOW IS:

Confidence.

🙃

Okay, you probably want to slap me now, and I get it. But SERIOUSLY THOUGH…. Confidence is THE one single thing you NEED in order to own ANY style. Think about it. Look at your favorite celebrities, musicians, or fashion icons. They often wear some of the most vibrant styles…and they do not walk around timidly with their head down.

Unapologetically rockin my mom’s prom dress from ’85💙

However, being confident is not only for celebrities. To be confident, you don’t have to be perfect, rich, gorgeous, or act like you have all the answers… In fact, nobody wants you to be perfect. Because…what even IS perfect? If you are striving to be someone else’s idea of “perfect”, you are not being yourself. We want you to be yourself so that you can embrace confidence freely, and exactly as you are. Plus, we want to capture it all on camera…

When it comes to fashion, the only way to WEAR confidence is by doing so UNAPOLOGETICALLY.  The unison of fashion and confidence is STYLE.  Remember that you have a powerful tool in your closet that requires no ironing or folding. And, can be worn in all seasons. Take your look up 10 notches by always wearing  CONFIDENCE as your main accessory.💄

Attention to detail is an absolute MUST when it comes to modeling auditions. Although there may not be a specific “dress code” stated on the audition post, your agent will generally require you to arrive in Agency-Standard Runway Attire. You will look professional and experienced. Better yet, you won’t have to think so hard about what to wear to your next modeling audition. We’re going to break down what Standard Runway Attire is for Men, Women, and kids.

In short, Standard Runway Attire is defined as an all black, form fitting outfit. Not only will this give you a professional edge, it will help the clients pay attention to your stage presence, confidence, and walk without getting distracted by a complicated outfit. You will want to wear something that is comfortable that showcases your shape and size.

Women:

Solid black leggings and a cami work perfectly for a runway audition. If you plan on auditioning for multiple shows a year, I highly suggest investing in some excellent quality leggings that are comfortable, move with you, and are never sheer in places that you do not intend them to be. My favorite are these Lux Flow Crop Leggings.

Runway Shoes:

A common mistake many inexperienced models make is wearing high heels that do not fit well, or are simply too uncomfortable to wear. The goal is to have a confident walk, so a major confidence-killer can be the wrong pair of shoes. I recommend wearing a classic black pump, 3″-5″ inches high, if you are just starting out.

Tip: Closed heel and closed toe will give you added stability. I usually opt for a classic black pump for runway auditions:

Hair:

Keep it natural. Clients like to see the length and overall health and color of your hair. Wear it down, or half up/half down (to keep it out of your face) and do not over style it with a bunch of hair products. To tame unintended frizz or flyaways, I always recommend this weightless silkening oil. I actually use this silkening oil every day. (It also speeds up drying time) One drop is all you need for all of your hair. Solid investment for runway auditions and photo shoots:

Accessories:

JUST. DON’T. Leave statement necklaces, large hair pieces, and sparkly bracelets at home. The focus should solely be on your stage presence and walk. The last thing you want to do is DISTRACT the clients with your shiny accessories. I encourage talent to take navel rings out, and all facial jewelry larger than a single stud.

Men:

I have not forgotten about you! However, you guys have it pretty simple:

Kids

Kids can wear an age appropriate, all black wardrobe as described above. Please, PLEASE make sure kids are dressing for their age, and that they are not wearing any make up. (This is NOT a pageant audition!)

Runway shoes for kids

Girls 12 & under should wear dress shoes that are either flat or have a tiny, “kitten” heel. We do NOT want to see 10 year olds in heels. These shoes should be closed toe and closed heel. Avoid dress shoes that are wedges, and absolutely no sandals or flip flops!!

Boys 12 & under are good to go with a dress shoe that matches their belt and compliments their outfit.

DON’T FORGET:

Your runway attire is not complete without your modeling materials. You should bring your modeling portfolio to every audition, or at the very least, your comp card or a printed out full-length photo of yourself.  Showing up to a runway audition without a photo of yourself gives the appearance that you do not care about being selected. You are unlikely to be remembered if you do not bring a photo to be remembered by! Be sure that you also have your up to date measurements to list for the client.

THIS IS FOR YOU, MY WISCO LADIES!!  Many times we’re left out in the cold (LITERALLY) when it comes to super cute fall fashion trends, simply because our “Fall” is approximately two seconds long, and then we roll right over into frozen-tundra mode. (Remember last year’s “off the shoulder jacket” thing? Yeah, exactly…I don’t either.)

Here are some realistically WARM ways you can stay on trend AND out of the cold:

1. PRINTS: PLAID AND ANIMAL PRINT

Plaid is everywhere this season. What I love about plaid is the subtle sophistication it adds to practically any outfit. Usually I am wary of wearing a lot of pattern, but there is something about plaid that makes it simple enough to still remain neutral. Update a casual summer legging-and-crop-cami look to a fall boss babe vibe by adding a loose blazer. On trend, and warm.Tip: Add a pop of red to your lip when wearing neutrals. Want the color to last all day? Get the best red lip ever.

2. TEXTURED AND PATTERNED SKIRTS

I am not even close to being ready to give up wearing skirts quite yet. I am absolutely IN LOVE with this look of the gray mini skirt paired with this Topshop crop top and  high rise boots. Keep an eye out for skirts with interesting texture, like leather or faux leather, velvet, and knitted pattern.

Okay, and now for the one we’ve been waiting for:

3. Boots!!

High rise boots. Low rise boots. ALL THE BOOTS.

These Steve Madden suede boots from Nordstrom look super classy and pair perfectly with the skirt! There are so many things that I love about this pair of boots. First of all, I own so many pairs of boots that I never feel like wearing, simply because the heels on them are impractical for everyday tasks. I absolutely love these boots because I can easily run to Colectivo or the Public Market while not sacrificing comfort for elegance…they even have the pointed toe, which really gives them such a modern look. I usually don’t wear pointed toe very often, simply because they are usually less comfortable, but these boots are definitely an exception!! Not to mention, the suede is SO SOFT.

Other boots that are on my radar are the ones with the side cut out, and ones with animal print!a

4. Big Sleeves and Bubble Sleeves

The puff sleeve was big and bold all over the runways at NYFW 2018, so it was reassuring to know that this subtly dramatic look isn’t going away any time soon. Tops like these take a pair of jeans to a whole new level.  Tuck the shirt in more tightly in the front than in the back. Add a simple belt to add a touch of elegance and to define your waist. My favorite part about this look is how well it transitions easily from a day time look to an evening look. Just let your hair down, and you’re ready to go!

Have a favorite fall trend? I would love to hear about it! Leave me a note to let me know you were here <3
